Steel Caskets

The long-lasting nature of metal combined with its affordability and performance make steel caskets one of the most popular selections.

The range of colors—from respectful blues, browns, blacks, and grays to peaceful pastels in purples, pinks, and blues—makes each selection unique.

Two major classifications of our steel casket product line are 18-gauge steel and 20-gauge steel.

20 gauge Steel Non-Gasketed Caskets

Basic 20 gauge non-gasketed (does not seal) caskets are a simple steel caskets without the frills. These caskets are also available in other colors. Call us for current availability.

20 gauge Steel Gasketed Caskets

20 gauge gasketed (sealer) caskets are the thinnest & lightest metal caskets we sell. The interiors are usually made of crepe in various colors to match the exterior. Fixed metal hardware or swing bar hardware varies according to the model chosen.

18 gauge Steel Gasketed Caskets

Almost half of all caskets sold in the US are 18 gauge steel gasketed (sealer). These caskets are made of a thicker, heavier steel than 20 gauge caskets. The interiors may be crepe or velvet (premium) and most have a unique theme panel in the lid. The exteriors come with a brushed and/or shaded finish with either fixed or swing bar hardware. Accents and hardware are of a higher quality.

Steel Gauges Used for Caskets:
Steel commonly used in the production of caskets is 20-gauge, 18-gauge or 16-gauge. 20-gauge is the lightest steel commonly used in casket production while 16-gauge steel is the heaviest.

Non-gasketed Steel Caskets are normally made of 20-gauge steel (some companies are experimenting with 22-gauge steel). Twenty-gauge steel is the same thickness used in many automobile body panels. These caskets may be spot-welded. They are usually the least expensive metal caskets available and are usually square-cornered designs. Some non-gasketed steel caskets include interior coatings.

Gasketed Steel Caskets are made from 20, 18, and 16-gauge steel. These caskets are usually continuous-welded at the corners or seams.  In addition, they may have seam-welded bottoms, or use epoxies to ensure integrity and reduce the likelihood of entrance of outside elements into the casket.  Normally, 20-guage caskets are square-cornered; 18-gauge and 16-gauge may be square cornered, round-cornered, or round-cornered urn designs; 19-gauge steel caskets use 20-gauge sides and ends and 18-gauge tops and bottoms.

Stainless Steel Caskets are most often square-cornered or square cornered urn designs. New products designs developed in the 1990’s include round-cornered and round cornered urn stainless steel casket designs. Stainless steel caskets often are comparable in price to midrange hardwood caskets and bridge the price brackets between cold-rolled steel caskets and semiprecious metal products such as copper or bronze. Stainless steel caskets have become increasingly popular in the 1990’s and now are purchased more frequently than copper or bronze caskets.
